Energy efficiency - to achieve more, we need to use less

Last article we learned that by increasing our solar footprint we can achieve 40% of

our renewable energy target. With predicted energy cost increases of 20-30% in 2023, the economics of rooftop solar may be even more palatable for more

people now. But if rooftop solar is still not an option for you, don’t worry, there are

some good low-cost ways to reduce your energy usage.

Between our original roadmap document from 2019 and the latest Enhar report

we’ve found we can achieve between 20-40% of our community’s renewable energy

target if we become more energy efficient.

Improving energy efficiency is the ‘low hanging fruit’ that should be actively

encouraged in the region through workshops and education and we’ve already held

two forums; conducted some energy efficiency audits at seven residential properties; helped the Apollo Bay Football Netball Club to apply for a grant to have an energy audit done; and published some of the case studies on our website so you can see what other local residents have done to reduce their energy.

So let’s look at some of the ways you can easily reduce the amount of energy you

use and get a rebate or discount to help you do it.

One example is your hot water system. Heat pump hot water systems can use up to

70% less energy than if you have an old electric storage tank. They are a simple and

effective way to reduce energy consumption and increase energy efficiency - and there are rebates available on eligible replacement systems.

The Victorian Government is also offering discounts or rebates when

you install energy-efficient products like a seven star electric clothes dryer; a new

fridge or freezer; a new TV; or an energy-efficient pool pump.
